Wellness continues to be a priority as parents begin to prepare for the upcoming school year, as it contributes greatly to their child’s success. But creating healthy routines during the transition from summer to back to school isn’t always easy. Whether it’s meal prep, creating a balanced diet, changing weather patterns, or busy schedules, parents are balancing a lot.

MS, RDN, Mia Syn, partners with Bayer, The Chinet® Brand, and Sweet Earth to provide some tips to help prioritize nutrition and overall health ahead of the new school year.

To help achieve success in the 2022-23 school year, it’s important to focus on daily routines that enhance your children’s lives. In fact, eating right during childhood and adolescence supports proper growth and development while preventing various health conditions. The CDC recommends meals that contain fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fat-free or low-fat dairy products, oils, and a variety of proteins.

There are many ways to achieve these goals, including solid foods, vitamin supplements, and plant-based protein. Also, young people should avoid empty calories. Added sugars and solid fats contribute 40% of daily intake between ages 2-18. About half of these empty calories come from soda, pizza, and whole milk.

Beyond diet, exercise and wellness also contribute to student success in the classroom. A US study showed that when pollen counts doubled, a percentage of elementary school students saw a drop in test scores compared to their counterparts. Nearly 1.7 million children have one or more allergies. Antihistamines can help treat symptoms and hives so children can focus on their studies, extracurricular activities, and more time outdoors.

Syn looks forward to helping parents map out their family’s nutrition and wellness plans for the upcoming school year.

An easy way to start a new school year is with breakfast. Syn says it helps a child’s attention span, concentration and memory, all of which are important for learning in school. “Maybe start the day with something fun and tasty like banana pancakes or mini fruit skewers. Kebobs are easy to make with pineapple, strawberries, grapes, and blueberries, just pair them with a flavored yogurt as a dip,” he added, “You can also try the apple cinnamon oatmeal. Take a store-bought oatmeal and top it with apples, cinnamon, raisins, and walnuts.”

The goal is to make sure the kids have the energy they need to make it to lunchtime.

Syn admits that the school year can get hectic, with parents often left searching for convenient ways to eat well throughout the day. However, we all know that convenient does not always equal healthy.

Registered dietitian nutritionist recommends Sweet Earth Foods, which offers delicious, nutrient-dense, and flavor-packed vegan and vegetarian options that are perfect to have on hand during the back-to-school season.

Two standout Syn options include the Korean BBQ-style Chik’n Appetizer Bowl, which has lots of vegetables like edamame, peas, and a cauliflower rice mix. She says, “Gochujang-style sweet and spicy sauce is full of flavor and everyone in the family will love it. And since it’s a prepared meal, all you have to do is heat and eat; it’s ready in just 3 minutes in the microwave or 20 minutes in the oven.”

“Mindful Chik’n comes ready-to-eat and has the taste and texture of traditional chicken with 18 grams of protein, making it a perfect addition to weekday meals,” says Syn, adding: ” You can serve it fresh out of the oven.” fridge or cooked into a family favorite recipe like chicken fajitas, a stir fry, or even a chicken pesto pizza.”

Whether it’s breakfast, grab-and-go lunch or dinner, the Chinet® brand can help make cleanup easier, allowing parents more time to focus on other aspects of life, including personal well-being. .

Syn says Chinet Classic® products are made for exactly what’s on their menu, adding, “They’re perfect for a bowl of cereal or oatmeal, or a bowl of bacon and eggs for breakfast. They obviously make lunch and dinner cleanup easier than ever!”

Nearly 1.7 million children have one or more allergies. With allergy season about to hit in some parts of the country, Syn says there’s a way for parents to give their kids some relief so they can enjoy the outdoors as they head back to school. “So when it comes to back-to-school preparation, parents will want to make sure their kids are feeling great and at their best,” adding, “Children’s Claritin® is the #1 selling oral allergy brand free without drowsiness recommended by pediatricians and gives kids indoor and outdoor allergy relief when they need it most.”

New research finds that children spend less than eight minutes playing outside each day. The registered dietitian and nutritionist is inspired by the brand’s commitment to helping kids spend more time outdoors. “Through its multi-year initiative, The Outsideologist Project, Claritin® is committed to helping kids get outside an extra hour a week by providing expert-curated outdoor activity ideas. It can be anything from going to the local playground, playing hopscotch, or even throwing a ball in the backyard.”
