Biden Administration Announces Plan to Bring Solar Power to Low-Income Homes

The Biden administration has launched a program to bring solar power to low-income homes across the country, a move that will help communities lower their utility bills, Politico reported. This is just the latest move by the administration to meet its ambitious climate goals. The new project could lead to the development of 134 gigawatts of new solar power capacity across the country.

The program would subsidize energy costs for low-income residents with developers of community solar projects. These sell subscriptions to households for renewable energy, which significantly reduces electricity bills.

The administration believes this could give a whopping 134 gigawatts of new solar power across the country. Currently, the solar capacity of the United States is only 97.2 gigawatts, according to the Department of Energy (DOE), so this is a big goal. The DOE estimates that the initial pilot project could save more than $1 billion in energy bills annually.

This program follows the announcement of a new pilot program in Delaware that will cover 70 percent of rooftop solar costs for moderate-income participants and cover 100 percent of solar costs for low-income families.

According to the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy, low-income households have a high energy burden, and the percentage of their income spent on energy is typically three times that of high-income households.

Households around the world are struggling to pay their utility bills. Earlier this year, it was reported that about 1.3 million New York households were two months behind on their bills, resulting in more than $1.7 billion in debt. This new project will help many people and help the country continue to move away from fossil fuels.
