Woodland, CA – Meals on Wheels Yolo County announced it received a $10,000 grant from the Bayer Fund, a US philanthropic arm of Bayer, among the organization’s weekday hot prepared meal deliveries.

“Food insecurity is affecting more Yolo County residents, especially seniors, than ever before due to the convergence of pandemic disruptions with extraordinary inflation,” shared Executive Director Joy Cohan. “Many of the seniors who depend on our program lack the resources to feel confident that they have enough to eat on the weekends, when Meals on Wheels doesn’t deliver. Thanks to this renewal of previous Bayer Fund support for our ‘Weekend Meal Project’, we are confident we have the resources to make weekend meal times more reliable and less stressful for these vulnerable older adults. ”.

Started several years ago, the “Weekend Food Project” now provides twice-monthly delivery of fresh produce and non-perishable food to 200 very low-income seniors among the nearly 500 regularly fed by Meals on Wheels. meal options This is a 100% increase in service over the last six months. This program alleviates food insecurity due to lack of funds, lack of transportation, and/or physical inability to stand and move around to prepare full meals on the weekends. Foods are assembled with simple preparation and easy access in mind, so these seniors can maintain their health despite difficult circumstances.

“Over the years, grants made through the Bayer Fund have helped strengthen our communities in the United States,” said Al Mitchell, Chairman of the Bayer Fund. “We are proud to be able to provide support to develop programs like the Yolo County Meals on Wheels ‘Weekend Food Project,’ which help combat the critical problem of food insecurity and ultimately ensure that even more seniors in Yolo County have access to healthy, nutritious food.”
