NEW YORK, August 1, 2022 – WNBA FIT Month presented by Kaiser Permanente kicks off today, August 1, with a special focus on engaging players, partners and community organizations to highlight the importance of healthy living through mind, body and the spirit.
Throughout August, the WNBA will promote the physical and mental wellness of fans of all ages with grassroots programs and events, broadcast and digital announcements, and in-arena and online programming. The WNBA will also work with experts to address health disparities with a focus on communities of color.
Additionally, the league and its teams will help educate fans and support those affected by breast cancer with the WNBA Breast Health Awareness August 17-30. The league’s longest-running platform, WNBA Breast Health Awareness (BHA), empowers women to proactively manage breast and ovarian cancer risks. It also sheds light on disparities in breast cancer incidence, care, and outcomes.
As part of the BHA’s efforts, the WNBA and its teams will coordinate events and activations in the arena while promoting initiatives from community partners and organizations dedicated to cancer awareness and prevention, including the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, the Society American Cancer and Bright Pink.
During WNBA FIT Month, the WNBA and Kaiser Permanente will host four grocery pop-up stores in partnership with Goodr, a certified B-Corp that uses technology and logistics to combat food waste and insecurity. Designed to provide healthy food options to families facing food insecurity and HBCU students returning to campus, the pop-ups will take place August 14 in Los Angeles, August 20 in Seattle, August 25 in Atlanta and August 30 in Washington, DC Each event will feed up to 250 families.
There will be five nationally televised dedicated games throughout WNBA FIT Month that will include in-arena activations, beginning Thursday, August 4, when Kia’s reigning WNBA MVP Jonquel Jones and the Connecticut Sun host 2022 WNBA All-Star Skylar Diggins-Smith and the Phoenix Mercury on ESPN2 (4 pm ET).
ABC will present two doubleheaders during WNBA FIT Month. On Sunday, August 7, The Sun will visit reigning WNBA Finals MVP Kahleah Copper and the Chicago Sky (1 pm ET), followed by Kia’s 2020 WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson and Las Vegas Aces, who will face the two-time WNBA Finals MVP. Breanna Stewart and host Seattle Storm (3 pm ET).
ABC’s second doubleheader will take place on the final day of the 2022 regular season, Sunday, August 14, highlighted by the final games of the regular season for WNBA legends Sylvia Fowles and Sue Bird. In Game 1, Fowles will lead the Minnesota Lynx against the Sun in Connecticut (1 pm ET). In game two, Bird and the Storm will visit the Aces (3 pm ET).
